Tree department
COULD someone from the City of Launceston council please kindly explain, as to why, the “tree department” has refused to remove or cut right back the extremely large gum tree in Peel Street, close to Hardwicke Street, at Summerhill?

This tree, known over the years for having rotten branches fall, most on the road, endangering pedestrians, school children etc from the two main schools nearby.
Recently, after the council stated “after a brief glance” that “it’s safe”, one of its large rotten branches fell, striking a parked car, demolishing it.
Now in the Stanley Street park, a short distance away, the council has cut down two perfectly safe trees that are not near traffic or the public. Have I missed something?
Remove good safe trees but leave “the well-known” to locals dangerous trees untouched. I don’t write as a “Greenie” because I’m not, I’m just a concerned, ratepaying member of the public.
P. Grout, Summerhill.
Mutton birding
I READ with interest the article in The Examiner (May 28) written by Isabel Bird regarding the use of drones.
While I agree the use of this modern invention is wide and varied (both good and bad) I fail to comprehend how their use in mutton bird surveys came to be accurate.
A large majority of burrows are covered by tudssocks and creepers such as pig face. As well, there are what is known as “dead holes’. These often are occupied by snakes or penguins.
To obtain an accurate count, each bird must be removed manually from its burrow for identification. I am interested to learn on which Islands the surveys have been undertaken.
My interest in this field goes back to the days in the 1950s and ‘60s when my parents owned land on Dog Island.

Pollie pay
ONCE more I’m proven to be wrong, I erroneously and maybe I’m somewhat naive in believing that being an MP was a full-time job.
Ivan Dean thinks MPs should be paid more for being on a committee. Well Mr Dean, if MPs have time to swan around with various committees they are certainly not working to the full capacity we are paying them for.
If said committees have anything related to government then you are already paid, if not related then stay away and do the job you’re paid for.
Check out how many days your parliament actually sits, then count your blessings, don’t whinge and moan that you can’t spend quality time with family, remember this was your choice.
Finally, if you consider being an MP is a part-time position, you should resign and let someone with a stronger work ethic do the job.

Two-state solution
Ed Sianski (Letters, The Examiner, May 31), unfortunately your opinion is based on fiction.
Briefly, how would you react when thousands of people, many being armed, attempt to invade your country to enter your villages and murder as many people as possible?
Israel is not the homeland of the Arabs, who almost all descend from migrants settling there after 1880, because they were attracted by the employment created by the Jews. These Arabs were indeed pushed out of Israel, however not by the Jews, but urged to leave by the leaders of the surrounding Arab countries.
No one justified Israel’s foundation because of the Holocaust. It has been the homeland of the Jews for more than 3300 years. Gaza-based reporters don’t dare report anything not approved by Hamas, so you read only propaganda. Study the real history.

Thank you
I WOULD like to congratulate everyone who organised and presented the Biggest Morning Tea event in George Town.
The support and participation of organisations and individuals who conducted the event was as usual excellent and raised much needed funds for the Cancer Council.
Sincere thanks to all our residents who attended and a special thank you to all the businesses in our community that gave a donation.
Well done, George Town.

Barnaby Joyce
WELL well, everyone including the media are crying foul because Barnaby Joyce is being paid for an interview outlining his side of Babygate.
If people including the media had minded their own business there would not be a story to tell so good on you Barnaby, milk it for everything you can and give them the “bird” in the process
Rob Kenna, Riverside.
Jessica Mauboy
NICE to read Don Davey's encouraging review of Jessica Mauboy's efforts at Eurovision (Letters, The Examiner, May 29).
Pity then that the judges didn't quite feel the same way towards the performance.
Indeed, finishing in 20th place behind such noted melodic balladeers that included Cyprus, Moldova, Estonia, Albania, Lithuania and Bulgaria just goes to show what one can achieve if one really tries.

Steve Martin
STEVE Martin, what a traitor to the people of Tasmania.
You were elected under the Jacqui Lambie banner and as there is no National party in Tasmania you are not representing any consitiuents.
Hopefully at the next election the people of Tasmania will remember your treachery and deliver us back Jacqui, a true Tasmanian.
