Iris the guide dog had a torn cruciate ligament which will leave her out of action, and away from her handler Jodie Jamieson, for at least two months.
Guide Dog Services coordinator Kim Ryan said Iris had been a wonderful patient.
“Surgery has gone well, and she is currently undergoing rehab for six weeks before returning to light duties with her client,” Ms Ryan said.
“We hope she will be back to full duties in a few months’ time.”
Iris has been having water treadmill therapy twice a week.
“[She] is a champion at this, increasing her speed each time, which is helping her build up her muscles and stabilise the joint around the surgery site,” Ms Ryan said.
“We thank all the supporters that donated to Iris’s surgery and post op treatments. Her client has been overwhelmed and very grateful for the support of the local community.”
Iris had her stitches removed on May 18. She will continue rest at the Guide Dogs Tasmania office in Hobart.
The surgery cost $4000 with Guide Dogs Tasmania calling on the community for support. In just 48 hours, the full amount required was raised.
In preparation for Iris’ surgery, Mrs Jamieson had cane training.
“I’m just so used to Iris so I don’t feel as confident. I just don’t feel as safe going out by myself with the cane,” she said.
“I have 100 per cent trust in Iris and she knows my routines and my places.”
