The front page of The Examiner on July 23, 2007, reported:
It may have been foggy, but yesterday’s inaugural Mercure Launceston 10km sent a clear message that it could become a popular annual event on the Tasmanian calendar.
As 1230 competitors voted with their feet, the event’s elite field endorsed its potential with Victorian winner Mark Tucker clocking a blistering time of 28:37 and fellow placegetters Brett Cartwright and Patrick Nyangelo also going under 29 minutes.
Anna Thompson completed a Victorian double by winning the women’s race with Donna MacFarlane the first Tasmanian home in second.
A strong Tasmanian contingent, supported by a supportive crowd, confirmed the event had also won local approval.
Race director Rob Gillard said: ‘‘The weather was a little bit poor with the fog, but it’s all come out well and we’re absolutely elated.’’
