Eight of the 44-strong team hail from Launceston, including juniors Dylan Hill, Tim Wilson, Ruby Lowe as well as Mika de Bruyn, Lucy Chesterman, Liam Franklin, Axel Zammit and Tasmanian team captain Nathaniel Suidgeest.
The group have been busy training four times a week at Launceston’s PCYC for the past few months.
Launceston Coach Pip Hedley said it was an extraordinary effort just to qualify for the national championships, with all the expenses of athletes self-funded.
“It is something I think Launceston should be really proud of,” she said.
“To have eight representing our team at Launceston PCYC is a really great effort.
“This is the only venue in the state’s North that can support athletes in their training for an event like this.
“The first team we ever sent to the Australian championships in 2002 only had five members statewide. Now we have 44.”
Next week’s competition will be held at Melbourne’s Hisense Arena and also serves as a selection event for the World Championships.
