The organisation’s chief executive Stephen Brown said more than 400 people currently volunteered.
“Mission Buddies is a reaction to the fact that we are increasingly asked for more flexible opportunities to volunteer with City Mission,” Mr Brown said.
Peter Doddy has been volunteering in the organisation’s Morton House kitchen and said it had made him realise he had lived a privileged life.
“There was one guy, he was just a nice guy, I said ‘where are you living mate?’ and he said ‘at Seaport’, and I started to think, that’s about $500 a week so I asked him where and he said ‘under the bridge’ and I thought how lucky am I,” Mr Doddy said.
“I’m proud to be a volunteer at City Mission. It’s an institution that cares.”
