The letters were sent to a number of tenants with “a random and incorrect figure” regarding the amount contributed by the tenant.
Housing Tasmania chief executive Peter White said tenants affected would be contacted “as a matter of priority.”
“Unfortunately, an issue with software used by the commercial printer contracted by Housing Tasmania to print the letters has seen a random and incorrect figure printed in a number of letters regarding the amount contributed by the tenant,” Mr White said.
The letters had been sent as part of a normal reassessment of public housing market rents based on information supplied by the Valuer-General.
“Housing Tasmania sincerely apologises for this error. We will be re-writing to tenants with the correct amount immediately.”
Tenants will receive a corrected letter in the coming days.
“Tenants can be reassured that the Housing Tasmania system maintains the correct amounts of their rental contribution. This is only a printing error, and they will not be charged the incorrect amounts,” Mr White said.
Any affected tenant wishing to discuss the matter can contact Housing Tasmania on 1300 665 663.
