Now in its 18th year, the event aims to promote the value of literacy skills through a group reading of an Australian book.
This year’s book was Hickory Dickory Dash by Tony Wilson, who also authored the 2017 storytime choice.
The fun started early at Mowbray Heights Primary School, which conducted its reading 15 minutes before the scheduled time of 11am so as not to interrupt recess.
Assistant Principal Steve Smyth was tasked with reading the story and said while the book may not have been for everyone, the message was clear.
“We just want them to pick up a book,” he said.
"It can be long or short, difficult or easy.
“The act of reading a book is becoming rarer, so it’s nice to have a reminder like this.”
