A single adult male Queensland fruit fly was detected in a Biosecurity Tasmania trap at Mowbray on May 10.
This detection came four weeks after another male fruit fly was found in the suburb by a member of the public.
A Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment department spokesperson said the male fruit fly detected in early May did not constitute an outbreak and “does not require a control area at Launceston”.
“There is no evidence of an established population in the Mowbray area,” the spokesperson said.
Biosecurity Tasmania will continue surveillance and monitoring in the Mowbray area to determine whether an active population is present.
The fruit fly traps will be inspected in the Mowbray area for nine weeks after the date of detection.
“Biosecurity Tasmania staff have continued their work in this area since the initial detection – inspecting surveillance traps, undertaking surveillance and talking to property owners,” the spokesperson said.
