The reigning champions for three years running face a determined Queechy High, hoping to take home its first cup success at Youngtown.
Kings Meadows coordinator Michael Smith said the annual football competition has added an extra dimension this year from the growth of the number of girls taking up the game.
“It’s going to be a bit of grudge match all round, no doubt,” Smith said.
“But it’s also the first time we’ve got six games – we’ve now got two female games, so it’s bumped it up overall from five last year.
“It will just add to the mix and make it all just highly competitive.”
The Bulldogs Cup is the brainchild of the neighbouring schools and is given warm support from NTFA club South Launceston.
Smith said students were keen for the fixtures to keep growing and turn the cup contest into a long-standing tradition following the inaugural meeting in 2015.
“We want to be supporting local football and also local sport,” he said
“Just to provide a good atmosphere between the two schools and their communities. It’s a great building block for sport in the area.”
That consensus should ensure the rivalry stays friendly both on and off the field.
“There has been a competitive edge between us and there has been a good rivalry – it’s never been negative, always positive,” Smith said.
