Some described it as the largest reality television event. The wedding of Prince Harry to Hollywood star Meghan Markle was streamed into households and online for the world to see. Tears flowed as the prince caught the first glimpse of his bride. Those who watched were lucky to have a front row seat to a somewhat private moment. Afterall, it wasn’t a state affair.

In four years, Prince Harry has moved from third to sixth in line to the throne. It is extremely unlikely he will ever be king. Therefore the wedding was just that – a beautiful ceremony featuring a young couple who are in love. No heads of state were invited. It was an intimate as a royal wedding can be.
So why the fuss? The wedding ceremony showcased why we should care. The 80 minutes exemplified what to expect from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Meghan began her walk down the aisle on her own. Many commented that it would have been nice if her mother could have joined her. But if you look at her history, her charity work has been around female empowerment and gender equality. To walk solo towards Prince Charles waiting halfway to the alter was perfect.
The service included a sermon by Chicago Bishop Michael Curry. He was nearly the Pippa Middleton of the wedding. His freestyle speech opened and closed with Martin Luther King Jr quotes.
“We must discover the power of love, the power, the redemptive power of love,” he said, quoting King. “And when we do that, we will make of this whole world a new world. But love, love is the only way.” He was passionate, zealous and emotional delivering the message of love. The royals squirmed at times. It was perfect.
A gospel choir sang Stand By Me and a 19-year-old cellist performed while the happy couple signed the register. Garlands of white peonies and roses graced the entrance and chapel – Princess Di’s favourite. A hymn sang at her funeral also featured in the ceremony. It was a perfect tribute.
The wedding summed up what has been a renewed public interest in the British royals thanks to Princes William and Harry. The brothers and their partners have used this resurgence to promote charities with a focus on mental health. That’s why this wedding was important. It’s a platform to begin work that can impact the world.
On Saturday, diversity, love and tradition all collided. And it was perfect.
