Last week, a public meeting was held for the council to gain community input about the project.
The proposed precinct was first touted in 2015, with a Meander Valley Regional Recreation Precinct committee forming soon after.
Committee member, and Deloraine Squash Club president, Cory Youd said about 100 people attended the meeting.
“The night was actually really good. It was a good community representation and a fairly broad range of people there,” Mr Youd said.
Towards the end of the meeting, three motions were put to the council.
“The first was that the council recognise that the current facilities for sport and recreation in Deloraine no longer meet the needs of users,” Mr Youd said.
“The second was that the council support the proposed precinct at Alverstone Drive as outlined in the Deloraine and Districts Recreational Feasibility Study.
“And the third was that we ask the council for immediate action to progress the project including the purchase of the land adjacent to the community complex.”
Mr Youd said most of people at the meeting supported the proposal.
“There were a lot of people that were there for more information and there were some groups there for support,” he said.
“It’s in the council’s hands what they do with it now. But all those motions were voted in favour for. There was only one objection in the whole room.”
The group hoped the council act on the feedback “fairly soon”.
“It’s a considerable amount of money that is being considered. I think the scenario three [design] is penciled at $13.2 million, so there is a lot of consideration that has to go into that from the council’s point of view,” Mr Youd said.
“There were a lot of positive comments around sport and recreation stimulating areas and trying to keep people in communities so we’re not losing them to bigger cities.”
