Two toilets, including a disabled access will be constructed on Hobart Road if a development application is approved.
The toilets will be built on council-owned land near the Kings Meadows Hotel, adjacent to the Kings Meadows shopping centre at 119 Hobart Road.
The bid for the 24-hour toilets came after the Southern Launceston Community Development committee started a petition in February 2017.
Committee chairman Alan Harris said it was wonderful to see the development start to take shape.
“It’s a great step forward. We’ve been looking forward to this for a long time,” Mr Harris said.
The council received the petition in August 2017. It gained more than 1180 signatures. In September, the council said the project would be started by the end of 2017 and would take about eight weeks.
City of Launceston council received a $50,000 Community Infrastructure Grant from the state government for the $90,000 project. The remaining funds will be contributed by the council.
The original development included a bridge over the Kings Meadows Rivulet, but Mr Harris said it would not be continuing.
