The cross-town derby could perhaps foreshadow a finals clash as both teams are in impressive form and will aim to continue this towards the pointy end of the season.
West Devonport travels to St Leonards to face Tamar Churinga in what should be another highly-contested game of hockey. Both teams sit towards the bottom end of the table, Tamar seventh and West Devonport ninth, so this is an important game for their seasons to get the ball rolling.
Another two teams keen to kick-start their seasons with a win, Devonport and Launceston City take to the field in Meercroft Park, Devonport.
Launceston City got their first points last weekend with a draw against South Launceston Suns whereas Devonport has registered two draws so far. A win will propel both teams up the ladder.
In a round full of tight matches, Queechy Penguins travel down the coast to face Smithton in a potential must-win match for both sides.
Coming off a close 3-2 win against West Devonport last week, Smithton heads in on a high while Queechy will be looking to break through for their second win of the season with Evan Lawrence in scintillating form.
In the final game of the round, second-placed South Launceston Suns face in-form City Marians, who have had three straight wins coming into this weekend.
South Launceston’s only blemish on the season so far, a draw, occurred last week against Launceston City, and bouncing back with a win will be of high priority.
In the Women’s competition Queechy Penguins have the same trip down the coast as the Men’s side to meet Smithton.
Smithton faced a tough task last weekend against West Devonport, going down 5-0 and Queechy constructed a 2-all draw with City Marians, so getting back on the positive side of the ledger will be the goal this week.
South Burnie looks to continue their winning ways after last week. This will be a challenge however, facing West Devonport, who has only dropped one game so far.
South’s Mel Scolyer scored twice in the previous win with West Devonport’s Meg Wootton giving her all in recent matches.
Second-placed South Launceston Suns take on City Marians at St Leonards Saturday afternoon.
Both teams participated in close-knit matches last weekend, South picking up a 1-0 win over Launceston City and City Marians playing out a draw against Queechy Penguins.
A win will shape either team’s season and lead them potentially towards finals.
Lastly, Launceston City hopes to bounce back from their tight 1-0 loss last week when they face Devonport.
Creating scoreboard pressure will be the task for Launceston City this week after struggling to do so against the Suns. Devonport is aiming for their first win of the season against City to get their season on track.
