The council called for food organic and garden organic bins tenders, and will take the submissions into consideration at its May meeting.
Infrastructure manager Greg Ingham, in the council agenda, said communities were becoming more aware of the benefits of recycling.
“Australian community consultation around the issue of green waste recycling shows high satisfaction levels in people knowing their organic wastes are being recycled rather than going to landfill,” he said.
“Many councils in Australia have, over the past few years, implemented kerbside green waste collection.”
Mr Ingham said the separate collection reduced the amount of green waste going into landfill, reduced greenhouse emissions, and produces compost suitable for retailing.
The FOGO service would be a voluntary one. The more densely populated areas of Riverside, Trevallyn and Legana would have the bins rolled out as stage one.
The council predict about 1100 properties would take up the offer, with a $100 annual fee as parts of the resident’s rates.
The company that already collects the municipality’s waste, J J Richards and Sons, is recommended to be awarded the tender.
J J Richards and Sons would charge $2.21 per bin.
The only other tender, submitted by Veolia Environmental Services, was dependant on how many bins were required, however Mr Ingham said there did not “appear to be any advantage in accepting the higher priced tender”.
The extent of FOGO charging and potential subsidy will form part of the council’s 2018/19 budget deliberations.
