Tasmania Police is strongly advising motorists avoid unnecessary travel to the CBD, New Town and Sandy Bay.
Tasmania Police Acting Inspector Ian Mathewson said major roads are significantly affected by flood waters and debris.
“Significant delays are expected across the CBD as roads remain closed across peak hour,” he said.
Road closures:
- Lower end of Macquarie Street
- Davey Street between Campbell and Argyle streets
- Davey Street between Campbell and Burnett streets
- Brooker Highway between Brisbane and Warwick
- Channel Highway between Browns and Beach roads
- Risdon Road
- Morrison Street between Murray and Castray
- Sandy Bay Road between Waimea and Derwent Water avenues
Emergency services have received hundreds of calls for assistance overnight.
“It is requested that people with medical conditions only present at the Royal Hobart Hospital,” Acting Inspector Ian Mathewson said.
More rain and strong winds were expected to continue on Friday.
