Primary Industries Minister Sarah Courtney said the council encouraged better management of deer, game and browsing animals when she launched the body at Agfest on Thursday.
Stakeholders, including recreational shooters, landowners and farmers, are invited to apply for council membership, and the chair, Ms Courtney said.
“I’m hoping for a high degree of interest. A number of people have raised this with us ... so I’m looking forward to getting a wide range of voices being heard on this council,” she said.
The council will conduct a wild fallow deer census, implement new five-year crop protection permits and explore opportunities to support landholders in managing deer.
