A group of TAFE painting and decorating teachers from around Australia will volunteer their time to come to the state’s East Coast to paint the inside of the clubhouse.

The teachers will come from TasTAFE, North Melbourne Institute of TAFE, Federation Training, Gordon TAFE, and the Bendigo Regional Institute of TAFE.

Sailing squadron commodore Glenn Stewart said the squadron took over the lease of the clubrooms in December , and due to being unoccupied for a number of years, they were “quite run down”.

“This project will breathe new life into the area and help our club to continue to grow, providing great experiences for our community, particularly the local youth,” he said.

TasTAFE teacher Scott Dalton said a national meeting for TAFE painting and decorating teachers is held annually in different states.

This year, it will be hosted by TasTAFE at its Alanvale Campus on June 12.

“We thought that with all the teachers in one place it was a great opportunity to combine our skills and give something back to the community,” Mr Dalton said.

“The St Helens Sailing Squadron is an important part of the local community, bringing together people to learn to sail, but also providing a range of community events.

“It’s also a nice opportunity for teachers from interstate to see a bit more of Tasmania while they are here.”

The painting and decorating project will take place on June 13 and 14.

Paint for the project will be donated by Dulux.

Commodore Stewart thanked the TAFEs involved and Dulux for “this very generous project undertaking”.
