Mr Hodgman’s speech built on Governor Kate Warner’s 2017 Anzac Day address, in which she invoked stories of women’s contributions to wartime Australia.
Across the country on Wednesday, women led Anzac Day marches for the first time since the holiday’s inception.
“Women have, for a long time, been a significant part of our defence effort,” Mr Hodgman said.
“Their selfless and proud contribution is beyond question. But our proper recognition of it, sadly, is not.
“Even today … there is still clearly much more to be done.”
Catholic Archbishop of Hobart Julian Porteous recited a prayer at the service.
“May the valued sacredness of every human life for the dignity of all humanity fill every part of our communities,” he said.
