- Directly contributing to Tasmania’s poor heart health are the above national average rates of modifiable behaviour risk factors:
- Almost one in four Tasmanian adults are current smokers,
- Alcohol consumption is higher than the national average.
- More than two-thirds of Tasmanian's report inadequate levels of physical activity.
- Only one in seven Tasmanians are meeting the national nutrition guidelines on vegetable consumption.
- The health of our Indigenous communities continues to be worse, with lower life expectancy, according to a 2013 report from Health Indicators, Tasmania.
So what can be done to improve the heart health of the Tasmanian community?
For those experiencing symptoms, or who have a diagnosis of heart disease, Charles Clinic Heart Care, Launceston provides high quality, accessible cardiology services to the Tasmanian community.
The clinic is the largest private cardiology service in Tasmania and is supported by 11 cardiologists, headed by Dr Geoffrey Evans.
The team provides services in Launceston and Burnie, as well as rural and remote communities as far west as Smithton and as far east as St Helens.
Since the establishment of Charles Clinic seven years ago, the management and staff have been passionate about wanting to provide a positive influence in changing the dire rates of heart disease in Tasmania.
Charles Clinic is very proud to launch the Charles Clinic Foundation which has been formed to improve the health outcomes of the Tasmanian community through advocating and promoting for health and social support systems that are accessible and relevant to the changing demands of the community.
The foundation provides education and support to the most vulnerable parts of the community, conducts research and advocates for a healthier Tasmania.
