Coming in off a 45-point victory against Gold Coast, the Mariners took the lead early at Dandenong’s Shepley Oval and led at every change.
The Thunder made a third-quarter surge to trim the margin from 21 points to eight but Tasmania held strong, kicking three last-term goals to two to secure a 9.13 (67) to 7.10 (52) victory.
North Launceston pair Tarryn Thomas and Rhyan Mansell were both crucial cogs in the win, with the former kicking three goals to further highlight his national draft credentials and the latter finding plenty of the ball.
Launceston 18-year-old Thomas Mundy was the Mariners’ only other multiple goal-kicker, with fellow Blues Blair Rubock and Ty Auton also hitting the scoreboard in a low-scoring affair.
Lauderdale duo Mitchel Anderton and Nicholas Baker were named the Mariners’ best players, with Launceston’s Alec Wright also influential over four quarters.
