The years of endless hard work and constant training to produce a few moments of glory.
Win or not so successful, you are all true champions and make every Australia so proud.
As friends of the Titmus family I truly know the sacrifices they made to follow their dreams.
They uprooted their entire lives in Launceston to move to the Gold Coast to be close to top coaches and facilities.
And from dawn to dusk, Ariarne put in a super huge effort to improve her God-given talent.
Congratulations to all those who competed and to all those who won medals.
It was a couple of weeks of sheer enjoyment, and to the disability section, you are all wonderful incredible champions.
In our hearts you are what Australia is all about, a competitive fun loving nation.
Well done.
Peter Doddy, Trevallyn.
Tamar River
AFTER READING of a proposal last week from one of your readers concerning the damming of the river to make a lake, it sounds nice but would it be feasible?
The river being tidal will always have a silt problem.
Although it would be welcomed by the children of our fair city to be able to have a dip in the Tamar. I can recall as a child swimming beside the yacht club.
There was a small patch of sand there.
Someone told me years ago that the sand was trucked in and not a natural occurrence. In the meantime, our council needs to liaise with the government locally and and with the federals to get funding for another dredge similar to the old Ponrabble.
It kept the river deep enough for the passenger ships Taroona and Nairana to travel between
Launceston and Melbourne.
Maybe this is a pipe dream on my part, but one can only hope.
Mr. Cecil Neil Guy, Youngtown.
Live exports
WHY DOES it take a TV show to inform the relevant ministers of the cruelty occurring to Autralia’s live exports?
Should they not be undertaking adequate monitoring themselves so that they are confident of being fully informed?
Why is this not occurring?
Is there not meant to be an accredited Australian animal welfare officer on all voyages?
If not, why not?
These are some of the obvious questions in my mind after seeing the recent report.
I have written to the government on this matter several times before, yet the same cruelty is still occurring.
Live exports should be stopped today – as the government has shown time and again, it is not capable of ensuring the proper welfare of our animals occurs.
I am ashamed that our government is allowing our animals to be treated in this way.
But of course my shame is nothing compared to the suffering of the animals of live exports.
How can the leader of our country expect the Australian people to respect him or his government when they allow this to happen?
Bert Lawatsch, Maydena.
Grave Finacial Matters
SEEMS even when you've passed away, financial matters live on.
The Labor Party gave $40 million to dead Australians during the global financial crisis and now the Commonwealth Bank are charging dead clients advice fees.
Is there to be ever no rest from money matters?
John Chatwin, Riverside.
Brisbane Street Mall
INTERESTING letter commenting on the Brisbane Street Mall revamp and hoping that the council isn't making it into yet another concrete jungle.
Civic Square springs to mind.
However, if that is what’s to come, maybe the council could spend more of our rates on importing a few exotic animals just to complete the jungle illusion.
Glennis Sleurink, Launceston.
The Great Gulf
WATCHING the advertising of luxury and sometimes ultra luxurious products on television, and then pictures of the many homeless and those needing charity, I am very conscious of the great gulf between the haves and have nots in our community.
I know I am stating the obvious, but it needs to be stated.
Malcolm Scott, Newstead.
Congratulations
HEARTY congratulations to the Launceston winners of gold medals at the Commonwealth Games. I look forward to applauding them at the parade organised by City of Launceston council.
Mike Turner, Invermay.
Power summit
FEDERAL Energy Minister Josh Frydenburg thinks that he can fix the power problems by getting the states to agree on power generation and emissions, but why shouldn't the coal fired states be made to look at all the alternatives.
NSW, Victoria and Queensland have many small river sysytems that could easily be used for hydro generation but they have always opted for cheap and easy coal. Open your eyes, dams last for a long time, and with today’s technology, they don't have to be the size of Snowy Mountain to give a good reliable power output.
Kenneth Terry, Bridport.
Live Exports
ON THE subject of live exports, Suzy Jones (The Examiner, April 18) said “Shame on us all for letting this go on”.
Speak for yourself Ms Jones, some of us have been against live exports for years. I didn’t vote for this government, did you?
