Fifth straight victories in as many rounds has the northern rivals nine points clear of the pack, with game in hand.
But not before City were given a late scare against a combative South Hobart.
City’s Kiara Walsh caught the visitors’ defence napping in the opening minute to pull away to a shock 1-0 lead, as Lillian Shegog struck a second goal on the quarter hour.
But South hit back twice inside three minutes during the second half to equalise.
Goals to Phoebe Djakic and Isabella Ferrier entering the final half hour put City’s unbeaten run on hold.
It was left to top WSL striker Keilin Fagan to safeguard the Devils from an upset.
The 17-year-old scored in the 64th, 76th and 91st minutes to bag eight goals in five matches and seal a 5-3 win.
Ulverstone had showed it will seriously challenge for the Women’s Super League title following a 5-0 away win over University in Hobart.
The phlegmatic first half was forgotten when Ulverstone’s narrow advantage quickly blew out into the matchwinning lead.
After Jazmin Gorrie’s initial 14th-minute strike gave the visitors the break, four goals in 20 minutes through Lucy Reimer, Lucy Foote, Gorrie, once again, and Lear Diprose sealed the outcome.
Ulverstone will host City on May 5 after next week’s round of the Statewide Cup.
