Unity on hospital
WITH regard to the current situation at our Launceston General Hospital it is time for all sides of politics to realise that health is not a political football.

The LGH has been a centre of excellence and major teaching hospital catering for more than 50 per cent of our state for as long as I can remember.
It is essential that our elected members, irrespective of their political persuasion, co-operate to find solutions for the hospitals current woes, for the good of our community. If we want to retain and attract good staff we need to show the LGH is a great place to work and Launceston is a great place to live.
While I appreciate it is important to balance budgets and live within one’s means, it is also important to ensure adequate funding for essential services such as our public hospitals.
The LGH staff are amazing, whether it be domestic and cleaning staff, nurses, ancillary or doctors, no one hears a bad word about them.
These people go above and beyond on a daily basis to ensure patients have the very best care possible, and it is essential they know how much they are respected and appreciated.
In the best interest of our community, let’s stop the blame game and for once work together to achieve a fully funded and resourced hospital with decision making as close as possible to the point of delivery.

Weather and Stupidity
IT MAKES me so upset when I read about people driving fast in inclement weather, to the detriment of themselves and others.
Yes, racing is amazing, so go to Bathurst, enjoy your passion and scratch that itch.
The season of black ice in Tasmania is upon us. The road says 110km/h but this is only when conditions are ideal.
There are families coming back from holidays, hardworking folks just needing a safe passage. The police send out adverts and television skits to ensure we all take care.
If you want to drink, do this at home and that includes recreational drugs.
So when you are feeling brave, angry or just stupid, please allow the rest of us to get home to our loved ones, and then you get to be our unknown hero.

Fair Go
WHAT a terrible thing to hear that one in five children are not getting three meals a day and in some cases no food at all some days.
Unfortunately, these statistics exist in many underprivileged world countries, but to hear this happening in Australia is unforgivable.
My heartfelt thanks to the organisations that are reaching out to needy folk by providing fresh produce.
Thank goodness that the majority population of this nation believes in a “fair go”.
I am sure that those helping organisations could benefit from our financial assistance as do all aid organisations.
Carl Sherriff, Newstead.
Super Star
BRAVO to Ben and the team for working tirelessly to breathe life back in to the Star Theatre.
It is a fantastic addition to Launceston. That Steve Nielsen (Letters, The Examiner, April 12) has awarded the theatre half a star out of five is rather disappointing given this is based on his own choice of film (Oscar-winning Three Billboards).
We are lucky to be offered internationally recognised movies in such a lovely setting and if you don't particularly like it, as my husband thought of The Shape of Water recently, don't blame the establishment.
Perhaps Mr Nielsen should stay home and leave the theatre seat to someone eager to be challenged and entertained by contemporary film.
Claire Campbell, South Launceston.
Trump trouble
THE trouble with Donald Trump's blustering "mouth in overdrive, brain (such as it is) in reverse" approach to international situations is that, sooner or later another nation will decide to get a hit in first and then, as the saying goes, the excrement will smack into the ventilating device big time.

The Queen’s Wisdom
THE QUEEN has been very wise in appointing Prince Harry as Commonwealth Youth Ambassador.
The Queen sees the Commonwealth as her greatest achievement.
Young people will be able to relate to Harry in Australia he is seen as a bit of a larrakin and a real man.

Legalised Pot
SO GREG Barns, Richard Di Natale and Rosalie Woodruff, think it is a good idea to legalise marijuana.
Mr Di Natale has even gone as far as to suggest a national vote on the subject.
Before we all run off and madly plant pot in pots, and anywhere else we can find, can we hear from the medical fraternity?
Mr Barns states that pot causes less harm than alcohol.
Could this be because pot is illegal, and booze isn't?
I'm sure the AMA has some very interesting data on pot smoking, they'd just love to share with us, and the three I've just mentioned.

Financial Services
HAVING advised us that a Royal Commission into financial services was not required I wondered how Treasurer Scott Morrison would respond to the rorts exposed by the Commission after a very short time of its existence.

Arts Destination
WHAT about “Tasmania - the state of the arts” on our motor vehicle registration plates?
