The school holiday project involved about 40 students from Brooks High, East Tamar and Invermay Primary schools, who spent the day unearthing 19th century artifacts at a staged dig site.
UTAS lecturer and archaeologist Dr Louise Zarmati said the project was about showing kids the “hands on” side to historical studies.
“It is not just about digging in the dirt,” she said.
“This is a chance for students to see a part of real life history, up close and personal.
“Hopefully by the end of the day they will be able to put the story of Kerry Lodge together.”
History teacher Sarah Stockwin said she hoped the project would inspire a new generation of historians.
“History isn’t a noun, it is a verb – it is something you have to do,” she said.
“These students are going to be the future custodians of Tasmania’s history.
“We walk on our history everyday and we want students to appreciate that.”
