City of Launceston general manager Michael Stretton said the roadworks have been underway since late February.
“The works have progressed well, with the road being excavated and rehabilitated with base level works, appropriate subsoil drainage and total reconstruction to contemporary standards,” Mr Stretton said.
“This project delivers renewal of an important East-West linkage through the city, meeting the public roadway needs of today and into the future.”
The section of road between Tamar and Lawrence streets was expected to be closed for up to eight weeks.
Detours have been in place for several weeks.
Mr Stretton said access to all buildings in the area remained open with some alternative access points.
Details about these alternative access points and additional information are available here.
