These are the actions that cannot be reasoned or explained.
A good litmus test is trying to explain the actions of people to children.
The behaviour of those who were responsible for setting fire to furniture at a charity shop at Mowbray is difficult to understand.
At first glance there appears to be no motive.
It appears that nothing was stolen.
The only result is harm or havoc – for everyone in the community.
The volunteers at the shop would be heartbroken to discover the burnt donations and part of the shop damaged by the fire.
Every day those volunteers would deal with vulnerable people seeking help.
The items people donate are gifted to help others in the community who are struggling in that moment of time.
Whether it be furniture, clothes or food, donations are vital to help our community.
Generous donations help those who have just lost a job, leaving an abusive relationship or a marital breakdown, youth starting out on their own or the ongoing pressures from the cost of living.
Reading about the damage to My Charity Shop would be disheartening to 99.9 per cent of the community.
So, what can we do?
Keep giving.
We live in a region that is one, if not, the most generous in Australia.
That is evident through the many charitable events and initiatives supported by Northern Tasmanians.
Here at The Examiner we are lucky to hear about these stories on a daily basis.
The generous actions offer a sense of hope
Whether it be coordinating the donation of $150,000 last year to our local charities during our two appeals – Empty Stocking and Winter Relief – or donating physical items to our Mission Possible drive, running now in partnership with City Mission.
We celebrate the success of Launceston’s Freezing MND that raised $114,000 in 2017 and the businesses to donate grants to help schools or community groups.
It is easy to focus on the negativity – to be frustrated and angry with the behaviours of others.
But we can’t let this minority impact the brilliant work happening in our region on a daily basis.
