Treasurer Peter Gutwein said yesterday the first stage of the northern prison would be completed within the next five years.
“We are working through the process in the budget at the moment,” Mr Gutwein said.
During the election campaign the government announced the commitment to a northern prison to house about 270 prisoners.
A site for the new prison has not yet been determined.
It will house a range of prisoners, remand facilities and also a women’s prison.
It is expected construction of stage one will begin in the 2019-20 financial year.
The government says the northern prison will relieve pressure on the State’s only prison at Risdon and save families having to travel to visit relatives.
