Longford and Launceston product Chayce Jones will captain the Mariners in their season-opening fixture in Sydney on Saturday.

It is a big step in the right direction for the youngster, who sat out most of 2017 with a serious ankle injury.

Jones is one of 10 Blues named in the state’s best under-18s squad to take on Gold Coast Suns Academy at the Blacktown International Sports Park.

Coach Lance Spaulding said he was looking forward to seeing how the players go following practice matches against Launceston and Glenorchy.

“A lot of our guys have put their hands up in practice matches and across a strong pre-season of training that started in late October,” he said.

“We want to allow these guys an opportunity to showcase themselves in the best way possible.”
