Former Labor MLC Doug Parkinson and Independent Tony Mulder are seeking election to the new seat of Prosser.
The Tasmanian Electoral Commission on Friday will announce the nominations it has received for Prosser and the seat of Hobart with voters going to the polls on May 5.
Mr Parkinson, who said he left the Labor Party when he retired in 2012, said he had been appalled at the government’s move to change Tasmania’s gun laws.
“The clandestine way in which the Liberals announced their guns policy was the final stimulus for me to stand,” he said.
“I’m also concerned about water restrictions in the Glamorgan-Spring Bay municipality and think they should be lifted.
“People should come before fish farms.”
Health Minister Michael Ferguson urged voters in Prosser to support Jane Howlett who stood unsuccessfully in Lyons in the state election.
