The Sawtooth Arts Management Internship Program will involve mentoring with experienced arts professionals and are hands-on positions, which will support the paid staff.
The project will consist of two positions, one focused on administration, management and curation, while the other will focus on publicity, marketing and brand visibility.
Sawtooth ARI director Paul Eggins was thrilled to unveil the internship project.
It was a program he wished had been available while he was studying his Contemporary Arts Honours degree.
He started out volunteering at Sawtooth ARI before successfully applying for a permanent position.
Internships in artist run initiatives were rare as many did not last more than three years, Eggins said.
As Sawtooth ARI had successfully been running for seven years, it was an important step forward in continuing to foster the arts community, he said.
The internship position focusing on marketing and publicity will work with Sawtooth administration and development coordinator Brigitte Trobbiani.
Trobbiani is also the marketing and communications manager at Junction Arts Festival.
“I hoped that it can help people get a role in the arts industry,” Eggins said.
The interns would work about five hours per week, with a meeting each month to check on progress and for further mentoring, he said.
Eggins welcomed applications from students, emerging arts professionals of all ages and people passionate about the Tasmanian arts industry.
He anticipated successful applications would start by the end of May.
“It’s a big step up from what people might usually get,” Eggins said.
These types of internships for the management and publicity roles in the arts industry were “hard to come by”.
They would be directly involved, or able to look on, when artist applications arrived for the 2019 year, he said.
Sawtooth board chair Darryl Rogers said the gallery was proactively taking on an arts sector leadership role.
The internship developed the “much needed” art management skills in the sector, Rogers said
“We are committed to offering alternative learning pathways for those interested in a career in the arts."

Applications close on Sunday, April 22, at 11.59pm.
