Electoral Commissioner Andrew Hawkey said about 5 per cent of voters cast an informal vote and the number of Tasmanians who failed to vote had increased by about 1 per cent.
“We will look at the number of informal votes and also look at the number of people who did not vote,” he said.
The most informal votes was in Lyons with 4174, followed by Braddon with 3791 and Bass 3521.
Political analyst Dr Kevin Bonham said a 4 to 5 per cent informal vote was usual.
“The patterns are generally pretty consistent when it comes to the number of informal votes,” Dr Bonham said.
“I think a lot of informal voting is unintentional because people accidentally repeat numbers or miss a number.’’
Dr Bonham said the small fine for people who did not bother to vote was not a deterrent.
