The event, titled Tender Hearts, Sons of Brutes, saw Winton discuss “toxic masculinity” and the effect misogyny had on young boys and men.
Winton said the issue was more prevalent in regional areas of Australia, and was something that he had witnessed and experienced first-hand.
“I write about these people and these communities because they worry me and fascinate me,” he said.
“The source of my discomfort … it’s viceral.”
More than 400 people attended Winton’s talk at the Tramsheds.
Saturday’s event was Winton’s only Tasmanian appearance, brought to Launceston as part of the Tamar Valley Writers Festival.
