Also known as green bins in some parts of Australia, Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) bins are are used to dispose of all plants, branches, grass, food scraps, fruit and dairy.
The council is currently seeking tenders from the private industry to make garbage collections for wheelie bins containing FOGO waste, with a four-year contract up for grabs.
West Tamar mayor Christina Holmdahl said the service would only be available in the suburbs of Trevallyn, Riverside and Legana to begin with.
She said municipality residents in regional areas had other options of disposing with organic waste, a la composting.
The council will collect the bins every two weeks.
