After their inaugural show in 2017, ‘The Show Club’ organisers are hoping to follow on from their success to bring a bigger, better and tease-filled evening for 2018.
Sisters Lacey Maynard and Kahila Reed started The Show Club to bring something different to Launceston and follow their combined passion for dance.
“My sister Lacey and I have been dancing since we were three in different dance schools across Tasmania and we have studied everything from ballet, jazz and tap to national highland,” Kahila said.
“We have always grown up around dance and our mum owns her own dance school.
“We decided to do the show last year as there are not many people in Launceston, other than dance schools and dance competitions that do this kind of cabaret, burlesque style show.”
Audiences for the 2018 show are in for a treat, with rehearsals well underway for an evening of swing, cabaret and burlesque brought together with sleek voices and spicy dancers.
This year's show will boast 24 dancers accompanied by 21 singers performing songs from Frank Sinatra & Etta James to Britney Spears & Robbie Williams.
“The songs that we use will be all new this year and we mix it to fit the cabaret style, a real mix between the old and the new,” Kahila said.
“The singers that we have their voices suit cabaret style and we give them the freedom to be able to mix it up and do their own thing with it.”
This year Kahila has big plans for guest appearances and new ways in which to evolve and grow the show for their second year.
“Last year we had world record holder burlesque dancer Camilla Cream from Melbourne perform, so this year we are in talks to add in a few more special guest appearances,” Kahila said.
“We are also in talks to have a live band accompany our singers, which is really exciting.”
Returning to the stage this year The Show Club will have MC Rick Martin and comedian Kerri Gay.
Their first show was a sellout attracting more than 700 people over the two days, but Kahila said bringing this sort of show to Launceston isn’t without its risks.
“I was a little bit nervous last year, there are obviously other companies that do variety shows but nothing aimed exclusively at adults,” she said.
“The show isn’t overtly sexy but I suppose it's just not something that Launceston is used to.
“I was nervous about how the whole show would be received, not just the dancing but the comedy is also very adult, I love it but you can never be sure what others will think. “
With their sights firmly set on the 2018 show, Kahila has been overwhelmed with their dancer's commitment and energy each week.
“It is a big production but our whole team are so committed to pulling it together,” Kahila said.
“Everyone says you guys did a great job last year but really in the scheme of things it is the dancers and singers that make things happen, they put so much time and effort into every rehearsal and they aren’t paid they do, they do it for the love of dancing, it is a hobby.”
The Show Club’s 2018 show will be held at The Albert Hall, Launceston on July, 27 to 28.
