Homemade boats will launch for the second annual Soggy Bottom Regatta on March 4 and organisers hope to raise more than $30,000 to beat the total from the inaugural event.
Youngtown Rotary Club Vice-President and regatta chairwoman Sandy Astill said all proceeds from sponsorship and gate takings would be used to support rural health services and youth opportunity programs.
“Keeping within these themes, the Soggy Bottom will be donating all monies to the Royal Flying Doctors Tasmania, Gastroparesis Research, Zephyr Educational and Camps Tasmania,” she said.
This year’s event will not only have races on the lake but “dry races” where people can run with their boats through obstacle courses, before taking it on the water.
“We’ve got lots of events even if you don’t want to get wet,” Mrs Astill said.
The event will include a special race between Mayor Albert van Zetten and Club President Tas Rainbow.
The day will also include dragon boat races on the lake between the Launceston General Hospital operating theatre staff, with the surgeons - The Blades - challenging the anaesthetists - The Vapours - to a best of three challenge.
People still have time to register and can come along to take part on the day.
Judging begins at 9am and the first race starts at 10.30am.
Entry is $10 for adults and $5 for children.
