The Tasmania Fire Service said the pipe was broken during roadworks being done in Mellifont St just before 1.30pm.
A TFS spokesman said firefighters dealt with residual gas which had leaked from the pipe.
“Two workers were taken to hospital for testing and observation,” the spokesman said.
“The area was cleared and the situation resolved in less than an hour.”
It is believed the two workers were not badly affected by gas which escaped after the pipe was broken.
