Two Tasmania Fire Service aircraft were sent to Smooth Island on Tuesday afternoon, with reports a house, shed and surrounding vegetation had gone up in flames.
It is understood the resident was home at the time of the blaze but escaped.
Emergency services were contacted just after 1.30pm, with fire crews still working to contain the blaze at 3.30pm.
The island is located near Dunalley, where devastating bushfires destroyed 65 homes and damaged hundreds of other properties in 2013.
