With a background in hospitality and tourism, Mr McInerney has been involved with Harvest since its inception in 2011 as both a stallholder and board member.
He has taken over the president position from Kim Seagram, who has stepped into the vice-president role.
Mr McInerney said he was looking forward to continuing the market’s reputation for innovation.
“It is very exciting, because it is an amazing market,” he said.
“But at the same time, with all the founders and the hard work they have done, being given the challenge now to continue on and equal the drive of the market is daunting.”
This month the board said goodbye to a number of prominent Harvest stalwarts, including founder Jenny Edis who is moving to Victoria.
Ms Edis was the driving force behind the market’s inception when it was launched in conjunction with Festivale more than six years ago.
Mr McInerney said the market is known for breaking traditions, offering visitors a unique consumer experience.
“These days you can walk into a supermarket and leave with an item, without even talking to a single person,” he said.
“At the market, your are consistently engaging with every stall holder and you know they are the person who has grown the product.
“You’re also inevitably going to bump into friends there.
“That is what makes the market really brilliant.”
