Bass MHA Michael Ferguson said it was too early to say exactly which day it could be moved too when asked if a public holiday could be held during Agfest.
“We certainly won’t be taking away public holidays and we’ll work with the community to find the best solution,” he said.
“It’s unfortunate always when we see a good community event, with a long history, prove unviable. That is a shame for Launceston and the community.”
The Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry has used the news of the show’s demise to call for the end of mismatched show holidays and the introduction of two new statewide public holidays.
TCCI chief executive Michael Bailey said the concept of of localised Show Day holidays was one the Chamber had been concerned about for many years.
“With the sad demise of Launceston and Devonport Shows, next year we are faced with two cities having two show holidays … but no shows,” Mr Bailey said.
“It’s an obvious inhibitor to economic activity and growth when one half of the state, or a major centre, closes its doors for the day.
“For a statewide business, or one that does business interstate, it can be pretty debilitating.”
Mr Bailey proposed making Recreation Day (North) and Regatta Day (South) as Statewide public holidays to replace all Show holidays.
“That way, non-one misses out. The TCCI would also like to see the Hobart Show move its ‘People’s Day’ to Saturday and run the Royal Hobart Show Friday to Sunday.”
Mr Bailey said the history of Show Day holidays was centred around farmers being given the day to drive to the local show and participate.
“We now have issues around Agfest, where one region has a holiday to attend, but others don’t.”
