A mammoth 367 runs were scored in an entertaining fixture with Cressy at a tiny Legana Oval, with the Bulldogs working their way to 7-182.
Cressy captain-coach Damian Whybrow hit 54 and Matthew Haywood chimed in with 45 as they sent the ball to the boundary primarily off Jesse Arnol and Brett Martin’s bowling.
However, Adam Smith was superb with 1-6 off four overs and Kieran Davey collected 3-37 (4).
In reply, it was man-of-the match Shannon Rumbel (66 off 40 balls) and captain-coach Josh Adams (56 not out) that steered the Country Tigers to a six-wicket victory with an over to spare.
“It was very pleasing to chase down that target in 19 overs,” Adams said.
“Shannon played beautifully and we knew if we could get off to a good start, keep wickets in hand, that we were a good chance.
“Adam Smith also bowled awesome line and length straight up, most of our bowlers coped a bit of stick, but he was outstanding.”
Longford will play Cricket North champions Westbury in round 1 of the statewide competition in January.
“It’s going to be a tough match but we’re glad we’re through to the next stage,” Adams said.
“We’ll give it all we’ve got and hopefully we keep on advancing.”
