The Legana Structure Plan put in place by the West Tamar Council identified the need for a new town centre in order to meet the growing demands of the area, and will provide a strategic blueprint for the town’s expected growth over the next 20 years.
In 2016 the Federal Government funded Stage One, which included the upgrade of the Freshwater Point Road intersection with Brigalow Street and Legana Grove, and the construction of a new Boulevard through to the boundary of the existing oval.
The new Boulevard would be built with the aim to encourage further commercial developments, community events, and activities.
Over the course of the 2016/17 financial year, stormwater works were carried out which has formed part of the overall redevelopment of Legana.
The next step of the upgrades were put to tender by the West Tamar council on November 21.
These new upgrades aim to provide a space that is both visually appealing and pedestrian friendly for the community of Legana.
Out of the five tenderers, the lowest tender by Zanetto Civil Pty Ltd was recommended to undertake the work
“It’s slightly over budget,” Councillor Geoff Lyons said. The tender will cost $1,469,843.04, which is over budget by just $69,843.04.
“The sooner we can get on with this, the better,” he said.
Councillor Tim Woinarski was also in support.
“I think I speak for most residents that they’ll be glad to actually see this get started,” Cr Woinarski said.
Cr Rick Shegog said it’s an exciting time for Legana.
“I think I’m stating the obvious when I say that this is quite an exciting time,” Cr Shegog said.
“When people start seeing turfing going up and some construction and some boundaries put in place...I think people should be quite excited.
“This will be the first stage where people can take ownership...of what’s going to be occurring in the future of their town,” he said.
Construction is set to start no later than April 2018.
