The $220 million program aims at increasing mobile phone coverage to regional sites across Australia.
Joining Blackstone Heights, in what is being labelled as the priority round, in Tasmania will be Devonport, Gunns Plains, Wilmot, Yolla, Beechford and Musselroe Bay.
Areas chosen for the $60 million priority round are the third group of towns involved in the nation-wide scheme.
Thirty-five black spot towns from the electorates of Bass, Braddon and Lyons were included in the first two rounds of the Mobile Black Spot Program.
Among them are Rossarden, Mole Creek, Lulworth and Targa.
The coalition government will now open the tender process for telecommunication companies to bid on the construction of new towers, according to a government spokesman.
The government is hoping for work on the towers to start in early 2018.
For what is part of the greater Launceston urban area, you have an expectation there would be good mobile coverage in that area.
- Meander Valley mayor Craig Perkins
Tasmanian senator David Bushby said the announcement was a great success for the region.
“It’s fantastic to see that so many communities across Northern Tasmania are one step closer to receiving new and improved mobile coverage,” Senator Bushby said.
“Reliable access to phone coverage in this day and age is critical – I call on the telecommunications companies to give us their best tenders to deliver further coverage across the state.”
Meander Valley mayor Craig Perkins said there was an expectation in the community that urban areas, such as Blackstone Heights, have strong mobile coverage.
“For what is part of the greater Launceston urban area, you have an expectation there would be good mobile coverage in that area and particularly at the dam itself, which is used for recreation,” Cr Perkins said.
"It’s really important that the Australian government has moved on its election commitment to improve the mobile technology and coverage.
“You’d be hopeful some other places are nominated for black spot support and that the [telecommunication companies] take that opportunity up.”
