Chief executive Nigel Hill said the build had been completed to a platinum standard under the Liveable Housing Australia guidelines.
“This property has a lot of features in it that other properties simply don’t, so you’ll notice very accessible bedrooms, bathrooms and space, particularly even the ability to get out into the environment,” he said.
“This is the first of what we plan to be 10 or so new buildings.”
Some of the funding to construct the facility came about through the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
“We have about 160 staff across the North and North-West, about 30 are here in Launceston and it’s obviously growing as the NDIS kicks in,” Mr Hill said.
Greg Howe’s son Mitchell will be one of the four residents moving into the new home.
“It’s more space, the original home was fairly spacious when it was put in, but this one has more space for the carers so they are able to do the things they need to do,” Mr Howe said.
“There are nicer bathrooms and the ability to handle their disabilities with ease, so it just makes it better.”
The building will replace the existing home at Summerhill which was built about 30 years ago, Bass MHA Sarah Courtney said.
“Multicap Tasmania has been providing services in North and North-West Tasmania for 46 years and receives extensive funding support on many levels through the Department of Health and Human Services,” she said.
