Across the state 271 students were awarded a certificate for being in the top 1 per cent of NAPLAN results or being top of their school – or both.
Grade 3 East Tamar Primary pupil J’Kobie Nichols was delighted when a letter arrived saying he had been named top in his school for his literacy and numeracy results.
He said going into the tests he wasn’t quite sure what was happening, and told his grandma and parents that “he hadn’t done well”.
Grandma Lisa Nichols said she cried when J’Kobie told her the news.
Norwood Primary School also had two stellar pupils: Charlotte McLennan and Cameron Parker, both in grade 5, came top of their school for their NALPAN tests.
There were fewer nerves for the grade 5 pupils; Charlotte said having taken the NAPLAN tests in grade 3, she wasn’t too worried about the results.
Between them they balanced out both requirements for the tests, with Charlotte’s favourite subject being English, and Cameron’s favourite being maths.
At the award ceremony on Wednesday, held at Brooks High School and attended by local politicians, educators, school representatives and plenty of proud parents, the North’s finest pupils were awarded a certificate marking their academic excellence.
Education Minister Jeremy Rockliff said the NAPLAN results provided an important opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate high achievements in literacy and numeracy across Tasmania.
“The achievements we recognise today are testament to the importance of instilling, and maintaining, a passion for learning and discovery,” Education Minister Jeremy Rockliff said.
“A special thank you also to our dedicated school staff and proud parents, carers and families for the important influence and support provided.”
