Make successive sowings of peas, beans, sweet corn, beetroot, radish and carrots.
The herbs parsley, basil, mint, coriander, rocket, thyme, lemon grass, dill, oregano, sage and marjoram can be planted.
In the ornamental garden plant alyssum, nasturtiums, marigolds, impatiens, lobelia, tuberous begonias, carnation, Livingstone daisies, cosmos, coleus, dahlias, foxgloves, hollyhocks, delphiniums, aquilegias, pansies, poppies, snapdragons, sweet peas, cinerarias, zinnias, nigella, forget-me-nots, salvias, gypsophlia, Sweet William, larkspur, verbena and celosia.
Pumpkins, squashes, cucumbers and zucchinis are warm-loving summer annuals that grow easily from seed sown into mounds of well-drained, enriched soil.
Feed regularly with Thrive Soluble Plant Food so they reach maturity as fast as possible.
Cut back broad beans to within 15 centimetres above the ground after the pods have been picked and they may produce a second crop.
FENNEL FERVOUR
Fennel is a bulbous vegetable, about eight to 12 centimetres in diameter with a mild aniseed aroma and taste. Plant in a sunny position in well-drained, enriched soil.
The bulb can be lightly cooked or used raw in salads.
The leaves, which are rich in vitamin A, are picked before the small, yellow flowers open and are chopped and added to fish, veal and pork dishes.
Seeds are harvested when their colour is a greyish-green for use in vinegars.
Planted near the dog kennel it is said to deter fleas.
Grows well with dill and coriander.
RESCUE THE ROSES
Spray roses for back spot prevention as soon as the new leaves turn green.
Spray every 10 to 14 days with a fungicide throughout the growing season to ensure your roses are free from black spot infection.
Black spot is caused by a fungus and is seen as dark brown or purple leaf spots that result in yellowing and loss of leaves.
If left unchecked it can have a debilitating effect on roses.
DAHLIA DELIGHTS
Plant dahlia tubers in a sunny position that is protected from strong winds.
Plant in deeply dug soil which has had a complete fertiliser at the rate of 250gms per square metre forked into it.
Put in supporting stakes before planting the tubers to remove the risk of damaging their roots.
Set tubers, about 60 centimetres apart, into the soil with the neck near the stake and the growth bud vertical.
Cover with loose soil and water gently.
Don’t water until the dahlia plants are about 15 centiemetres above the ground.
