The Tasmanian Craft Fair have teamed up with local art curator Alice (Alby) Holder to bring something a little different to this year's fair.
No Ordinary Island – is a contemporary Tasmanian collection of art, craft, and design featuring emerging artists who have departed from the ordinary but not from the island.
“The Tasmanian Craft Fair approached me to curate an exhibition that featured young Tasmanian emerging artists to have an exhibition at the fair, which they previously haven’t done,” Alby said.
“The exhibition consists of seven local artists who in their practices use innovative techniques or approach.”
The exhibition will feature a broad range of artists working with a variety of techniques, while all the works are different Alby believes they will all work together.
“I’m excited about presenting the artists together, I think that while there is a great variety of artists and techniques when they are brought together as a whole, it is going to be something pretty special,” she said.
“Amber Koroluk-Stephenson works in traditional oil paintings but her conceptual approach to her art is very innovative, her works are realistic with a surreal quality to them which leaves you wondering about the mystery behind the work.
“Then there are artists like Samantha Dennis who mainly works with porcelain and jewellery, and her work is very intricate and detailed, she moves away from the norm in the sense that she approaches fascinating subjects.”
Alby is bringing over two decades of experience to this exhibition having worked across Australia implementing a wide range of visual arts, craft and design projects including exhibitions, public art projects, festivals, and events.
Building on knowledge originally garnered in the nation’s best cultural institutions Alby has a keen and comprehensive understanding of arts and culture and how these industries relate to the broader community, particularly in regards to public art, place-making and community cultural growth.
Alby hopes to bring something new to the Craft Fair that might entice a new and different set of visitors.
“The fair hasn’t featured emerging contemporary artists before.
"A lot of the work that’s produced and crafted by stall holders is with traditional methodology, I think it will attract a different set of visitors to the fair, and it gives the artists a chance to engage with a whole new audience,” she said.
