Sam McCambridge provided an early lead against Northern Territory but Glenn Freeman’s men went down 2-1 and Western Australia inflicted the same scoreline despite Kieron Arthur’s ninth goal of the campaign.
Jeremy Edwards, Jack Welch and McCambridge were on the scoresheet in a 3-1 win over ACT.
Tassie Van Demons finished their tournament without a win but did get on the scoresheet in their final two fixtures.
Captain Sarah McCambridge struck a 33rd-minute field goal in a 3-1 loss to Western Australia and Teisha King converted a penalty corner in the 2-1 defeat to Northern Territory.
A goal from Emily Rockefeller saw Tasmania’s under-13 girls finish their tournament with a 1-0 win over NSW Lions.
The team had also lost 4-0 to Queensland Cinders before a 2-1 win against Western Australia Emeralds courtesy of a first-minute goal from Madison Clarke and another from Maddison Brooks.
In the boys’ tournament, Kiah House struck the consolation in a 4-1 loss to South Australia before goals to Joe Short and Marx Richter earned a 2-1 win over Queensland Cutters.
Short again scored in a 5-1 loss to Queensland Sabre which was followed by losses to NSW Stars and WA Storm.
Tasmania claimed a bronze medal in the men’s 50+ masters tournament in Hobart. Goals from Scott Street and Andrew Batge secured a 2-0 win over Western Australia after the Tassie team had lost a tight semi-final 1-0 to Victoria.
The victory provided the host state with a third medal from the tournament after the Division 1 team won bronze and the division 2 silver in the over-40s.
At least seven Tasmanians were named in men's masters squads.
Matthew Selby, Stuart Withington (both over-40s), Alistair Brooks, Damian Smith, Pete Kooner, Jarrad Poke and Brett Withington (over-45s) were selected with Withington named over-45s captain.
Hockey Tasmania general manager Bob Gregory was pleased to see the Tasmanian teams competing successfully, winning a number of medals and having a long list named to masters teams, with hopefully more to come.
“This tournament has been extremely successful in showcasing the sport of hockey in Tasmania and providing an economic boost to the state,” Gregory said.
“We now look forward to a successful under-18 national championship being held in Launceston in March, 2018.”
