The plan is to create cohesion and industry development, improve communications with tourists, grow the North East’s attractions and advocate for better infrastructure in the region.
Premier Will Hodgman said the project was about growing the government’s number one priority. Its goal is to get 70 per cent of all visitors to the state to stay overnight in a regional area.
“This is about growing regional tourism so that communities right across Tasmania share in the benefits of the visitor economy, particularly through creating new jobs,” Mr Hodgman said.
Mr Hodgman said the North East had already achieved healthy growth in tourist numbers in the past year, with Derby up 33.2 per cent, and Scottsdale up 13.8 per cent.
“The better the experience for our visitors, the longer they will stay, the more they will spend and the more likely they will be to come back,” he said.
