The Tasmania Fire Service has warned of an early start to state’s fire season, with the East Coast set to bear the brunt of a dry winter.
Representatives from the fire service joined members of the Parks and Wildlife Service and Sustainable Timber Tasmania in preparing for the bushfire season at a briefing at Inveresk on Wednesday.
Tasmania Fire Service chief officer Chris Arnol said early predictions pointed to a long and busy season for the state’s fire fighters.
“It could be as early as October when we get fires, based on the predictions the Bureau of Meteorology has given us,” he said.

“The predictions are stating the eastern part of the state will be the worst hit.
“We’ve had good rainfalls on the West Coast and the North West, but the low dryness on the eastern side means we need to be prepared up the Derwent Valley, as well as the East Coast.
“This summer, we need people to be prepared by going to our website and making sure they know what our community protection plans are telling them.”
The Tasmania Fire Service has planned 15 briefings and five exercises in the coming weeks.
