Two weeks after going down to perennial champions Arrows in the grand final, the Hawks registered a handful of big wins on awards night, including goal shooter Ashlea Mawer winning the Rosalie Parkes award for the league’s best player as well as being named in the All Star team.
Mawer’s captain and last year’s Rosalie Parkes award winner Ashton Whiley was also named in the All Star team, winning the centre bib for the second year running.
The remaining spots were filled by Karana’s Katie Petrie and four Arrows players.
Hawks coach Ruth Tuohy, who was also recognised on the night, said Mawer thoroughly deserved the accolade and had played a considerable role in the Hawks netting an average of 73 goals per game across the season.
“She has had a fabulous season,” Tuohy said.
“She’s been a massive standout and really improved over the last few years I’ve seen her, she’s grown in confidence and it really sums up her season getting that award and making the All Stars.
“Because the best and fairest is voted by the umpires and the All Stars is voted by the coaches she’s had recognition from several aspects of Netball Tasmania this year, and it’s fully supported by us because she’s been a stellar performer.”
Tuohy also congratulated Whiley on another consistent season.
“She’s a real role model for the team and leader and I think being that centre player she links in with everybody at both ends of the court.
“It’s a team sport but this is also some great individual recognition for the girls.
“Although we didn’t end up with the result we wanted at the end of the year, it’s still fabulous to be recognised and it adds more highlights to the season that we’ve had.”
Cavaliers young gun Shannae Heazlewood was named as wing defence in the under-19s All Star team.
Arrows goal defence Ellie Fleming was named most valuable player in the under-19 competition.
